Thomas' Story
Friday Jul 19th, 2024
About two years ago, Thomas moved from Philadelphia to Baltimore in search of a better life. In his hometown, Thomas was susceptible to drugs, violence, negativity, and other bad influences. “I survived the streets and the trauma,” said Thomas as he reflected on his past.
Unfortunately, Thomas’ transition to Baltimore wasn’t as easy as he thought. Without a solid plan or support system in Baltimore, he experienced homelessness for the first time in his sixties. While experiencing a new trauma in an unfamiliar place, Thomas regained hope once he was connected with TIME Organization and placed in their emergency men’s shelter at the Holiday Inn Express in Downtown Baltimore.
During his stay at the shelter, TIME assisted Thomas with medical treatment, transportation, obtaining his birth certificate, and securing housing. “Everybody needs somebody,” said Thomas, “and TIME is one of those organizations that can help you obtain your goals”. After two years in the shelter program and an additional two months spent searching for housing, Thomas moved into his first Baltimore apartment which was also furnished by TIME. “I looked at one apartment, and it was good enough for me”, Thomas explained.
Now that Thomas has a safe place to call home, he looks forward to cooking, playing his PlayStation, and simply “getting old and gray”. He is also eager to play chess with his neighbors and visit family in Philadelphia soon. “My main concern was the housing, with God’s will, everything else will fall into place”.
Thomas’ advice to anyone who is currently experiencing homelessness or going through a difficult time is to be patient, “As long as you have breath in your body, you have a chance”.
